Honda is facing class-action lawsuits alleging some of its vehicles suffer from an idle-stop defect. According to victims, 2016 to 2020 model year Honda Pilot®, Honda Odyssey®, Acura TLX®, or Acura MDX® vehicles are equipped with a feature designed to shut off the engine when the brake pedal is fully applied and the vehicle is idling, and then restart the engine when the brake pedal is released. However, for the vehicles at issue, the engine idle-stop function is allegedly unreliable and may fail to restart the engine when the brake pedal is released. This defect presents serious safety concerns as drivers and passengers can be left stranded in the middle of traffic while attempting to restart their vehicles.
Affected models include:
2016-2020 Honda Pilot® • 2019-2020 Honda Passport® • 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey®
2015-2020 Acura TLX® • 2015-2020 Acura MDX®
Lawsuits have been filed alleging Honda has known of the defect for years but has not issued a complete recall. Vehicle owners are often left with expensive towing and repair bills while the underlying issue with the idle-stop system remains unsolved.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation in June 2022 after receiving hundreds of consumer complaints. The NHTSA noted that Honda acknowledged in meetings that it was aware of the problem. Despite this knowledge, Honda has continued selling the affected vehicles and left consumers to pay for costly repairs.
